The pain that suddenly developed on the left side of your abdomen didn't seem like anything to worry about. But then it got worse, and you had the sudden urge to have a bowel movement. When you went to the bathroom, all that came out was bloody diarrhea. Now you're worried.

Your worry isn't unfounded. Bloody diarrhea requires prompt medical attention. It may be a sign of a number of diseases or conditions. But if you're age 60 or older, there's a good possibility that you may have ischemic (is-KEM-ik) colitis.

Ischemic colitis occurs when blood flow to part of your large intestine (colon) has been suddenly reduced or blocked.
